Abstract

Cervical assessment IS essential In evaluating gravidae prior to labor induction. Digital evaluation of the cervix gives valuable information but it is subjective and may cause infection in cases with PROM. Sonographic assessment of the cervix is more accurate and more objective than digital assessment. Transvaginal sonography of the cervix overcome the limitations of transabdominal sonography and is more precise and abjective in evaluating gravidae prior to labor induction. This study was carried out in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mansoura University Hospital on 50 cases admitted for labor induction for various causes. Successful induction occured in 44 cases, 3 cases were failed and 3 cases were excludeddue to the use of prostaglandin for cervical ripening prior to induction. We found that parity, gestational age, fetal weight and maternal age are not significantly different between successful and failed induction groups. By comparing Bishop score parameters in both groups we found that only dilatation and effacement are significantly different whereas the remaining parameters are insignificant, this cope with the results obtained by Harrison (1977) and Herman (1993). As regard transvaginal sonographic parameters we found that all of them were significantly different between successful and failed induction groups. Paterson - Brown (1991) found that only cervical length and posterior cervical angle correlated with induction outcome.
