Abstract

Endometrial carcinoma is the fourth most common cancer in women with 37000 new cases every year in the United States. There has been a steady increase in the incidence of the disease over recent years which may be related to the increased longivity, increased cholesterole in diet and exogenous estrogen supplementation. Endometrial carcinoma is common in obese, nulliparous women over the age of 50 years, approximately, 80% of the disease occurs in post menopausal women with the bleeding as the initial symptom in 900/0 of cases. Also, the 5 years survival rate . of endometrial carcinoma is affected by the degree of myometrial invasion, ranging from 93.7% when no invasion is presen and 880/0 when only the superficial layer of myometrium is invated, to 36.20/0 if invasion is deep. So, early detection of the disease and knowing the depth of myometrial invasion or cervical invasion will dictate the preoperative irradiation or more extensive surgery and hence guide the patient to the best results.
