Abstract

Obesity is s common and one of most important metabolic disorder especially in developed countries where approximately 35% of adult populations are obese. It is an important manifestation of different well described syndromes characterized mainly by infertility e.g. polycystic ovarian disease, hypogonadism, laurencer Moon- Biedl- Bradet syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome and hypothyroidism. Most of obese women are fertile, obesity and infertility may be independent or coexistent disease states Hormonal disturbances in obese woman may lead to anovulation and hence infertility. On the other hand hormonal disturbances causing anovulation may contribute to obesity. A ccordingly when obese women with anovulation were given dietary counseling with reduction in their weight, the majority of them will regain normal ovulatory cycles. The main hormonal changes in obese women are related to enhanced aromatization of androstenedione to estrone in adipose tissue. Also diminution in sex steriod binding globulin levels is associated with elevation of plasma estrone suiphate levels. These hormonal changes were found to be associated with increased reproductive dysfunction.
