Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of macrosomia among pregnant diabetics attending the Antenatal Clinic and Obstetric Department at Mansoura University Hospital and to throw some light on its pathogenesis with special reference to the role of anti insulin antibodies on infants of diabetic mothers treated with animal insulin versus those receiving human insulin. Forty pregnant diabetics were selected; representing 100M,. NIDDM and GDM to getter with a reference non diabetic group of matched age, residence and socioeconomic status. Clinical examination with stress on obstetric history, general examination, body weight and height and the calculated BMI were stressed. Cases with diabetic macro or microvascular complications and those with preeclampsia, hypertension, liver, renal and cardiac lesions were not included. Ultrasonographic assessment of fetal status, SIze were performed at time of registration and at or before labour. Hospitalization of some cases were undertaken and a trial for control of their diabetic state (with the help of physicians) was carried out explaining the dietary modifications needed and the required insulin dosages, whether human or bovine. |
