Abstract

The present study is conducted to study the problem of psychiatric patient who seek non professional heIp (faith healing) in an attempt to explore some of the social and cultural background that would enforce those patients to seek healers help. The review of literature includes the history of faith healing and how it emerge into therapy followed by considerations about cultural and psychodynamic variables. Furthermore we reviewed folk classification, diagnosis and treatment, finally a short review about an important phenomenon which is the possession syndrome. The clinical part includes a survey on 1604 psychiatric patients attending Mansoura University Hospital in the period from January to June 1995 to study the prevalence of psychiatric patients who seek non professional help.
