Abstract The etiology of mental retardation is unknown in the great majority of cases, it differ from one locality to another The largest single group is mongolism, which accounts for 10-15 % ot cases. Infectious diseases have been increminated in the past in more than 4-9 % of case. Mental retardation as a sequal of congenital rubella has been estimated to occur in 1.5-9.3 % of cases. This work was done in a trial to clarify the relation between rubella infection and mentally retarded children of the unclassifiable type. This study was carried Out on 96 children 48 cases for each of test and contral groups. The 48 children of the test group were selected from mentally retarded children of the unclassifiable type, their age were ranging from 1-14 years old with a mean age value of 5.98 : 3.20, 26 (54.20 %) males and 22 (45.80 %) females.
