Abstract

The material of the present study comprised 28 patients with bilharzial cor pulmonale as a test group, 22 males and 6 females, with ages ranging between 19 and 55 years. Patients were selected from the outpatient cline of cardiology Mansoura University Hospital. At the same time, 10 patients with hepatosplenic bilharziasis and 12 healthy persons of matching age and sex were considered as two separate control groups. The diagnosis of bilharzial cor pulmonale was based on the presence of symptoms and signs of pulmonary hypertension, electrocardiographic criteria of right ventricular hypertrophy, radiological evidences and echocardiographic data diagnostic of pulmonary hypertension. The diagnosis of bilharzial aetiology of pulmonary hypertension was based on the presence of symptoms and signs of hepatosplenic bilharziasis, urine and stool analysis for living or dead bilharzial ova and rectal mucosal snip biopsy for living or dead bilharzial ova or worms. Patients with pulmonary hypertension due to congenital or valvular heart disease and patients with associated other cardiac disorders as hypertensive or coronary artery disease were excluded from the study.
