Abstract

The present work entails a study of the clinical, audio-metric and caloric testing of the ears of 75 patients from the out-patients of Radiotherapy Department, Manial Hospital, Cairo University, whose ears were exposed to ionising radiation in the treatment of malignant tumours of the head and neck area. Our aim is to throw more light on the patho-anatomical and patho-physiological ”basis of radiation effects on the ear. [I. Review of the literature on the subject during the last sixty years was done. It included a lot of work on experimental animals in comparison with the meagre work done on humans; a study of these effects on the human ears was first reported in 1961 by Borsanyi et al%, followed by Leach in 1965^60^ and by Dias in 1966 ^26 II. Case material, diagnostic criteria and methodology, were presented. A special reference to audiometric and caloric testing by the Fitzgerald and Hallpike technique was done* The total dose these patients received was found to range between 2000 r and 7000 r in an over all period of 7 days to 5 weeks.
