Abstract Melanocyte stimulating hormones (MSHfs) repre¬sent one of the major determinants of human melanin pigmentation. MSH f s comprise 3 peptides , <X,- , B-and #-MSH, that are derived from a common precursor , proopiomelanocortin, which involve the precursor of c<-MSHt ACTH , the precursor of^J-MSH ,^B-LPHf and pro Through a cyclic -AMP dependent mechanism , MSH’s stimulate the melanocytic melanogenesis and cause slowing of melanoma cell multiplication with modulation of its differentiation. Furthermore f together with the neur-ogenic, behavioural and antipyretic effects escribed toOf-MSH f cx-MSH was suggested to have a possible role in regulation of aldosteronef gonadot ropin, prolactin and growth hormone secretion » control of sebaceous gland secretion , fetal development f and in parturition. In contradiction to<X-MSH and ^-MSH which are characterized and localized in human beings there is controversy as regards the actual existence of JB-MSH |
