Abstract
Alopecia areata is a common hair disease. It is characterized by a single or multiple discrete or confluent, circular or oval plaques of asymptomatic non-scarring (alopecia. Alopecia areata is an idiopathic disorder, and immunologic methodology is being applied to the study of its Ipathogenesis. The present study was undertaken to study some aspects of immunologic reactivity in alopecia areata which [may help to illustrate the obscured pathogenesis or to (indicate prognostic value in persistent cases. Fifty patients were included in this study: 37 patients had alopecia areata, and 13 patients had alopecia totalis. fThey were randomly selected from the outpatient clinic of Dermatology and Venereology Mansoura University Hospital In addition 10 control normal persons were examined. Routine histological examination using Hematoxylin and Eos in stain, revealed that 43 patients (34 alopecia areata, and 9 alopecia totalis) showed peribulbar inf i Iterate,- and these cases were selected for imrnunohistochemi ca 1 analysis stained by imrnunoperoxidase method for determination of the cellular infliterate and T-cell subsets.
