Abstract

This study was conducted on thirty seven adult male dogs. The dog was put in a wooden box with a small opening in its cover, through which diethyl ether was drippled till the dog became unable to move . The dog was then taken from the box to the operating table. Anaesthesia was quickly continued with the i.v. administration of thiopentone sodium in a dose of IO IOmgKg- I • Muscle relaxation was obtained by succinyl choline • The lungs were ventilated artificially via a cuffed endotracheal tube by a constant volume respirator.Anaesthesia was maintained by either halothane or nitrous oxide: oxygen mi xture. The abdomen was opened by a midline incision giving ade- quate exposure of the porta hepatis. The hepatic artery, portal vein, and abdominal aorta were dissected and suitable electro- magnetic blood flow transducer were applied and connected to Gould Statham flowmeterto measure the flow.Systemic arterial pressure and splanchnic pressure were recorded by a cannula inserted via the femoral artery and splenic vein respectively, and was connected to~a pressure transducer which was connected to a recorder which was connected to an ampilifier and oscill- oscope for continuous monitoring .
