Abstract

The thesis is divided into four parts: Part I. : Including a general introduction about minor components, including a definition of minor components and the objective of the work. Part II.: This part is divided into two subparts Part II.A.: This division describes a reversedphase micellar liquid chromatographic method with UVdetection for the simultaneous determination of benzyl alcohol and its degradation product benzaldehyde at 254 nm. Part II.B.: This division describes the determination of benzyl alcohol in piroxicam injectable formulations by applying the fourth order derivative spectroscopy adopting the zerocrossing technique at two wavelengths 255 and 262 nm . Part III.: This part describes a highly sensitive fluorimetric method for the determination of traces of iodide. The method was based on the dissociation of a nonfluorescent ternary complex of silver1,10phenanthrolinetetrabromofluorescein by iodide to produce a fluorescent product that emits strong fluorescence at 533 nm after excitation at 326 nm. Part IV.: This part describes a highly sensitive microanalytical fluorimetric method for the determination of fluoride ions. The method was based on the quenching of the fluorescence of a ternary complex of terbiumsalicylatehexamine by fluoride. The fluorescent ternary complex emits strong fluorescence at 547 nm after excitation at 322 nm. Also, the studied compounds were determined in the different pharmaceutical preparations and in pharmaceutical raw materials and the results obtained were favorably compared with those obtained by the official and reference methods.
