Abstract

EGG is a novel noninvasive technique to detect gastric myoelectrical activities. It is simple, effortless, harmless and does not disturb the physiological activities of the stomach. It has no side effects and no contraindications. It is done by applying noninvasive electrodes on the abdominal skin over the stomach. The recorded signals are initially amplified as they are very weak, then filtered to exclude artifacts from cardiac, respiratory and limb movement, then analyzed visually then analyzed by software to determine the dominant frequency which is either normal, bradygastric or tachygastric There is normal EGG findings in children with GER and GERD, but abnormal EGG findings occur in children where reflux is associated with food regurgitation which is associated with increased esophageal acid exposure. EGG abnormalities in children with GERD are prevalent and depend on the nature of the refluxate material. These abnormalities are not significantly affected by age or sex. Severity of fed gastric electrical derangement parallels that of GERD. Children with GER and GERD might have the following EGG parameters ;normal EGG parameters in children with GER, normal EGG parameters in children with only acid reflux, normal EGG parameters in half of GERD patients with food regurgitations, while the other half have abnormal EGG parameters Children with severe GERD might have: Defective increase in the EGG DP. Higher fed/fasting DFIC.Lower fed/fasting PR.Some children may have normal EGG parameters. While children with moderate and severe GERD are identical in the prevalence of: higher periods of gastric dysrhythmias. lower percentage of normal rhythm either fed or fasting. Children with moderate GERD are identical to normal children as regard fed/ fasting ratio of DP and DFIC.
