Abstract

Background: The problem of chronic calcular cholecystitis is a common one in practice of general surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy seems to be an easy and effective method for cholecystectomy, however, it may have a effect on blood coagulation profile. Objective: Evaluation of the coagulation profile during and after open cholecystectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods: This study was carried out on 40 patients suffering from chronic calcular cholecystitis. Patients divided into two groups. group I were subjected to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. group II were subjected to open cholecystectomy. Three blood samples were taken from each patient, pre, intra, and postoperatively and compared to each other. Results: Results showed significant increase in platelet count postoperative in the group subjected to laparoscopic cholecystectomy compared to the group subjected to open cholecystectomy (P = 0.000). Laparoscopic cholecystectomy seems to have augmentation effect on blood coagulation profile. There was no significant increase regarding prothrombin time, bleeding time, and clotting time in both groups. Conclusion & Recommendations: It is recommended to use the prophylactic measures against deep vein thrombosis during laparoscopic cholecystectomy especially in high risk patients.
