Abstract Considerations have triggered us to study and to try to assess the different factors of anorectal functions in unselected patients with diabetes who attended our outpatient clinic, and to correlate the findings with duration of the disease, presence of autonomic neuropathy and microangiopathy. The present study comprised 60 patients with DM, 31 males and 29 females with age ranging from 16 65 years. The present study revealed that: Tonic activity of the anal sphincters, were impaired in patients with diabetes. Rectal compliance and rectal sensation were also impaired in such patients. A variety of impairment of the different parameters of the rectoanal inhibitory reflex were also found. The present study showed that severity of anorectal dysfunction, although inconsistent in the manifestation of its different parameters, was related to the duration of diabetes mellitus. Finally, we can conclude that: Anorectal dysfunctions are a significant source of morbidity. |
