Abstract

The Um Bogma environs south western Sinai are bounded by long 33 15` 33 35` E and lat. 28 56` 29 05` N, covering about 700 km2. The environs are covered by late Proterozoic basement rocks which are overlain non conformably by Paleozoic rock succession. ?The succession is classified into seven formations. ?The Cuminerals assemblage is dominated by highly oxidized minerals such as: carbonates (malachite and azurite), silicate (Chrysocalla), phosphates (turquois, pseudomalachite), sulphates (chalcanthite) and chlorides (atacamite and paratacamite). Copper is suggested to be derived from basalts and shales. ?The formation of uranyl minerals depends on EhpH conditions. An important mechanism influencing the migration of U and other cations such as Cu in natural waters, in their sorption onto Mn and Fe oxyhydroxides and clay minerals. In absence of complexing anions which from soluble complexes with these metals, such mechanism adsorbs metal ions from circulating fluids causing higher concentrations in the pore fluids thus facilitating their reactions with the available anions or their coprecipitation with Feoxides and oxyhydroxides.
