Abstract Leptin, the obgene product, has recently received considerable attention because its administration has been shown to reduce fat mass, food intake, hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia as well as to stimulate whole body glucose homeostasis. As regard to direct leptin action on the isolated target tissues of insulin, it remains controversial. Leptin receptors, expressed at high levels in the hypothalamus, have been identified in other nonneural tissues, although the role of leptin receptors in these tissues remains obscure. Furthermore, insulin action is modulated in these tissues following leptin treatment. The present work aims to study the direct effect of leptin on glucose and lipid metabolism in insulin target tissues, and also the effect of leptin on insulin action in these tissues. Fasting healthy male albino rats, weighing 200250 g, were used in this study. |
