Abstract

Oral lichen planus is a T cell — mediated inflammatary disease of the oral mucosa.
T lymphocytes accumulate within OLP lesions by extravasation from ie local microvasculature and subsequent migration to the oral epithelium Sugermann PB & Savage NW, 1996).
Helper T cells were identified by immunostaining for CD4 and stained ositively for IFN-y.
These is suggests that the IFN-y producing T cells may -ioduIate the progress of disease in local inflammation sites such as OLP ahashirna II., 1998).
r lie aim of the present study was to determine the levels of serum and csue IFN-y in patients with OLP during activity, and to correlate the serum and sue levels of IFN-y during disease activity with clinical and histopathologic :.verity of the lesions, aiming to clarify the role of T cell activation and cellr-ediated immunity in the pathogenesis of OLP.
IFN-’y exerts profound effects on inflammation as it up regulates MHC iss II molecules on most cells, activates macropages and enhances expression
adhesion molecules on endothelial cells. (Simark et al, 1998).
The following results were obtained :-
There was a high significantly serum and tissue levels of IFN-y in OLP patients during activity compared to controls.
.egarding the clinical severity, there was a significantly high levels of IFN-y rn serum and tissue when the severity of OLP was increased. i. e. there was a ‘erfect positive correlation between the clinical severity of OLP, and tissue bromd serum levels of There was significantly high serum and tissue levels of IFN-’y in patients v hose lesions showed severe histopathologic changes of OLP compared to :e levels of IFN-y in patients whose oral biopsies demonstrated moderate Lnd mild histopathologic changes.
