Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the use of Cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive “Histoacryl Blue” in mucoperiosteal flap approximation histologically and clinically.
The histological study involved 28 guinea pigs divided into 7 groups.
In each animal a trapezoidal flap was elevated in the upper anterior region of the animal’s mouth.
The left side of the flaps were approximated using sutures while the right sides were approximated using cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive “Histoacryl Blue”.
Animals were sacrificed in groups of four at one day , three days, five days, one week, two weeks, three weeks, and four weeks postoperatively. Mucosa of the upper anterior region of the animal’s mouth (including the operation site ) was harvested and divided into two pieces, each one represents one of the closure techniques used and prepared for staining with H&E and Trichrome stain for examination under the light microscope.
Histological examination at the first post operative day revealed that the adhesive sides showed well formed granulation tissue and less chronic inflammatory cell infiltration as compared with the suture sides.
At the third post operative day, the adhesive sides appeared with well formed fibrous connective tissue while the suture sides showed a highly cellular connective tissue and dense chronic inflammatory cell infiltration. At the fifth post operative day, the healing process in both adhesive and suture sides was begun.
After seven days, the healing was evident at the adhesive side while , the suture sides showed a partial healing. After 2,3 and 4 weeks, the two sides showed complete healing concerning with the covering epithelium and the underlying connective tissue stroina.
