Abstract The objective of the present study was to investigate some correlative metabolic changes in germinating cotton seeds inresponse to salinization. Treatment of cotton seeds with 0.25% and 0.5% aqueous solutions of NaCl caused an osmotic inhibition of water absorption and induced a steady decline in dry matter far above that observed in water controls. Concurrently, marked changes in the total amount and in the relative composition of the oil, nitrogen, carbohydrate, phosphorus and acid pools were observed in relation to germination period. |
