Abstract
Condensation of benzoin and pyrocatechol gives 7- hydroxybenzofuran (I) . Compound I is converted to the 7-methoxy derivative II by treatment with dimethylsulphate. oxidation of II followed by hydrolysis yields 2-hydro-3methoxybenzophenone.
