Abstract

This study aims to examine August Wilson’s, David Henry Hwang’s, and Tomson Highway’s selected plays in the light of Du Bois’ concept of double consciousness. This study analyses selected plays by Ethnic American dramatists in order to understand the similarities and the differences among them in displaying the idea of double identity as the consequence of their experiences. This dissertation examines selected hybrid American plays to understand colored people’s psychological fragmentation between their old identity and their new American identity, different forms of racial ideologies in the new world, the suffering of minorities, the role of women in resisting racism and how a lot of female figures become the source of changing in this racial society. Moreover, the critical analysis explores the dramatic tools which the playwrights use to uncover the psychological suffering of colored people in America and their fragmentation between two identities. The pidgin language, juba dance, blues songs, and Asian music are the tools which the playwrights use to represent their double identity in this racial society. This dissertation exposes social and psychological sufferings of the oppressed minorities in America and how they cope with these circumstances and become more satisfied by their double identity. The analysis depends on W.E.B Du Bois’ concept of double consciousness which lies at the heart of these plays.
