Abstract

The present thesis has analyzed the implicit meaning in Forty Years in Kuwait by the British writer Violet Dixon from a pragmatic perspective to clarify the implicit meaning and understand the hidden meanings contained in the literary work. This research includes an explanation of the theoretical framework of linguistic implication and its types. It also includes linguistic implications in Violet Dixon’s Forty Years in Kuwait and provides an analysis of these linguistic implication by applying them to some examples to highlight their importance in pragmatic analyses, thus leading to a better understanding of the implied meaning. Forty Years in Kuwait belongs to the genre of autobiography, detailing Dickson’s life and experience in Kuwait for forty years. She reflects on her identity and movement, despite being raised in a family of daughters and assuming the masculine role after her brother’s death. Violet’s Forty Years in Kuwait explores the significant changes she witnessed in the Arabian Gulf shaikhdom, including the Horwoodia Dicksoniae desert flower, named after Mrs. Dickson’s 1955 publication. Mrs. Dickson shares her experience with Bedouins in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The thesis has managed to highlight the pragmatic implicatures of Violet Dickson’s Forty Years in Kuwai. The thesis has shown that Dickson has been able to employ the notion of implicature to sum up her forty-year journey in Kuwait.
