Abstract

This study aims to examine how different environmental enrichment items affects broilers’ behaviour, performance, welfare parameters and blood profile A total of 200 one day old cobb 500 broiler chicks were used in a 35-d trail. Two hundred cobb 500 broiler chicks were allocated into a control and three treatment groups of 25 birds each in 2 replicates. The environmental enrichments items were straw bales in treatment A, elevated platforms (5 cm wooden platform) in treatment B and increased distance between feeder and drinker by 3.5 m in treatment C. Behavioural patterns of broiler chickens were monitored for four consecutive weeks. Food intake and mortality were recorded daily, while body weight was recorded weekly. Gait score was assessed on day 32, 33 and 34, while footpad dermatitis, hock burns and blood biochemistry were assessed on day 35. Broiler chickens reared under different environmental enrichment regimens appeared more active and exhibited maintenance behaviours (preening, wing flapping, and floor pecking) more frequently than non-enriched control birds. No effect of enrichment was observed for productive performance traits. Regarding welfare traits and blood profile, there was an overall tendency toward a lower gait score and lower levels of total cholesterol, LDL and non-HDL in birds experienced different enrichment tools.birds fed a diet supplemented with propolis, DHA and propolis plus DHA were more active and showed lower tendencies to rest and sleep compared to control group. Compared to control, preening was more pronounced in birds received a combination of propolis and DHA in diet. While wing flapping was displayed in higher percentages in birds received dietary propolis, DHA and propolis plus DHA. The addition of propolis, DHA and propolis plus DHA to broilers’ diet increased the number of birds engaged in feeding and drinking compared to un-supplemented, control group. So the addition of environmental enrichment tools (straw bales, elevated platforms, and increased distance between resources) appeared to motivate the birds for physical activities and to improve health and walking ability, without negative influences on growth performance parameters propolis and DHA have a synergistic effect in terms of increasing physical activity, intake and non-intake maintenance behaviour, improving body weight and body weight gain, increasing levels of serum glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidant capacity and improving sensory meat quality parameters.
