Abstract
Background: Psychiatric nurses are expected to uphold multiple formal and informal responsibilities. They play an important role in ensuring that their patients’ treatments are legal and in accordance with human rights, that improve patient satisfaction with the environment and treatment. Aim: The present study aimed to; explore the relation between psychiatric nurses’ perception of their responsibilities, patients’ rights and patient’s satisfaction. Subjects and Method: descriptive correlational design was used to conduct the study in Port Said Psychiatric Health Hospital. The study subjects consisted of two groups of 60 psychiatric nurses and 60 psychiatric patients. Three tools used for data collection consisted of; psychiatric nurses’ responsibilities questionnaire, psychiatric patient rights questionnaire, and psychiatric patient satisfaction questionnaire. Results: 66% of psychiatric nurses had low perception regarding their responsibilities, 86.7% did not perceive rights of psychiatric patients and 85% of patients had low level of satisfaction. There was no statistically significant relation between total scores of nurses’ perception about their responsibilities and patient rights as well as patients’ satisfaction. Conclusion: most of the studied psychiatric nurses had low level of perception regarding their responsibilities and patients’ rights, while the majority of psychiatric patients had low level of satisfaction. Recommendations: conduct an educational program about psychiatric nurses’ responsibilities and hospitalized psychiatric patients’ rights in purpose of enhance nurses’ awareness of their roles and increase patients’ satisfaction.
