Abstract

Egypt faces growing challenges of flooding, heatwaves, and limited public green spaces. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are presented as a potential solution due to their ability to provide a multitude of ecosystem services (ES). This research aims to develop a novel GIS-based model for optimal CW site selection. The model incorporates a multi-criteria approach, encompassing demand analysis, potential site identification and evaluation, and supply mapping. The methodology relies on a comprehensive literature review to identify key design factors and existing ES valuation tools, in addition to a Case study analysis that informs the model development, which is subsequently tested in New Damietta, Egypt. This demonstrates the model’s practicality, data efficiency, and suitability for early-stage urban planning applications. The research concludes by outlining future directions for model refinement and integration into sustainable urban development strategies in Egypt.
