The current study was performed in Al-Rajhi hospital nutrition clinic in the period between June 2022 and June 2023. The study included 1120 patients on whom the new international consensus proposed in 2020 for diagnosis of MAFLD was applied.
According to this consensus, diagnosis of MAFLD was stated in any patient with detected fatty liver by US plus one the following criteria: BMI > 25, T2DM or presence of 2 metabolic abnormalities in patients with BMI <25.
We found that 365 out of 1120 (the total patients examined) were diagnosed as MAFLD.
Mean age of the patients diagnosed as MAFLD was 45.15 ± 27.16 years with range between 18 and 54 years old. 53.3% of patients were females (n=195) and 46.6% patients were males (n=170).
Mean body mass index of patients diagnosed as MAFLD was 29.87± 4.78 (kg/m2) with 326 (89.3%) exceeding BMI of 25 (kg/m2) as follow: 166 (45.5%) patients had BMI between 25-30 (kg/m2), 109 (29.8%) patients had BMI between 30-35 kg/m2 while the other 51 (14%) patients had BMI exceeding 35 kg/m2.
Mean waist circumference of patients diagnosed as MAFLD was 103.25± 13.32 (cm) with 49/170 (28.8%) males’ patients had WC > 102 cm and 183/195 (93.8%) females’ patients had WC > 88 cm.
95/365 (26%) patients diagnosed as MAFLD had serum triglycerides exceeded 150 mg/dl and 67/170 (39.4%) males’ patients had HDL < 40 mg/dl and 172/195 (88.2%) females’ patients had HDL< 50 mg/dl.
Seventeen (4.7%) of patients diagnosed as MAFLD were diabetics and mean CRP was 5.73 ± 2.20. It was also found that 20 (5.5%) had positive HBsAg and 123 (33.7%) had positive HCV Ab.
Mean fibrosis reading in patients diagnosed as MAFLD was 6.52 ± 2.35 (kPa). Majority (54.2%) of patients had F0 while 81 (22.2%), 56 (15.3%), 18 (4.9%) and 12 (3.3%) patients had F1, F2, F3 and F4, respectively.
Mean CAP measurement was 263.45 ± 54.86. 93 (25.5%) and
87 (23.8%) patients had S0 and S1, respectively. S2, S3 and S4 were present in 97 (26.6%), 82 (22.5%) and 6 (1.6%) patients, respectively.
