Abstract

Social sustainability is a crucial aspect of sustainable development, aiming
to improve the quality of life. However, the emergence of gated
communities in Egypt has shifted priorities, prioritising isolation over
social engagement. This study examines the impact of social sustainability
in gated communities in the West of the Greater Cairo Region. We
conducted a literature review on definitions and concepts of social
sustainability and launched an online survey to measure social
sustainability in our case studies. We analysed data in depth based on the
survey results to assess the correlation between sustainability indicators.
Our results demonstrate that socially oriented aspects neutrally affect social
sustainability indicators and users’ satisfaction. However, the survey
findings indicate that users of gated communities rarely consider social
interaction, which reflects their satisfaction with the isolation in the gated
communities. Therefore, residents of gated communities should reconsider
the shared spaces within gated communities to improve social interaction
and enhance social sustainability.
