Abstract

Based on our findings, we think that neoadjuvant short-course RT followed by chemotherapy can be an effective alternative to conventional CRT in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer because it has comparable effectiveness with the added benefit of a lower toxicity profile as compared to conventional long-course RT concomitant with chemotherapy. In addition to a short treatment period which is more convenient to patients and doctors, as well as less crowding over equipment in overcrowded centers.
we recommend SCRT for use in developing countries and nations with limited access to radiation. Because of its shorter treatment time, lesser toxicity, and cheaper cost for supporting care. However, because the sample size was so small, additional larger studies with longer follow-ups are needed to corroborate the findings.
Limitations
• The significant limitation was the limited sample size
• Absence of patient-reported outcomes that would make possible a comparison of quality of life, anorectal and sexual functions.
• We did not include the late toxicity of both techniques and surgical complications.
