Abstract

Background: Epilepsy is the commonest serious neurological condition of childhood. It is a group of chronic neurologic disorders in which the indispensable feature is recurrence of seizure. The aim of this study was to study the effect of maternal practices on quality of life for their epileptic children. Design: A quasi-experimental design (pre- and post-intervention) was applied. Setting: This study was carried out at El-Arab health unit in Port Said city in Egypt. Subjects: A purposive sample of 80 mothers and their epileptic children from the previous mentioned sitting. Tools of data collection: A structured interview, mothers reported practices questionnaire and the pediatric QOL tool..Results: the study revealed thatstatistically significance differences between mothers reported practice score and quality of life as perceived by mothers post program evidance by less than three quarters of mothers had inadequate practice pre implementation of the program, while improved to the majority of them had adequate practice post implementation of the program and less than two thirds of the studied epileptic children had low quality of life pre implementation of the program, while improved to the nearly two thirds had high quality of life post implementation of the program. Conclusion: the educational program had a positive effect on the epileptic children’s mothers’ practices which improve their children quality of life. Recommendations: continuous regular educational programs should be provided to children with epilepsy and their family to increase awarness about epilepsy.
