Abstract

Regenerative tourism is concerned with improving the tourist destination to be better after the visit, so it is the joint responsibility of the tourists and stakeholders to make this happen. In general, regenerative tourism goes beyond traditional sustainable approaches; it’s based on systems, fits cultural and natural patterns, offers a path forward, and aims to produce positive outcomes in lieu of causing less damage.
A set of criteria has been formulated to measure the extent of the application of regenerative tourism in Hurghada based on the literature review analysis and taking into account Hurghada natural ingredients, such as its location, moderate climate, sandy beaches, coral reefs, and marine biodiversity. There are also man-made ingredients such as mosques, churches, museums, various hotels and resorts, bazaars, restaurants, cafes, and the customs and traditions of the local population. This research intends to explore the viability of implementing regenerative tourism in Hurghada and identify its benefits and the challenges that may hinder it in order to preserve the environmental resources for future generations.
This research used the descriptive-analytical approach, where interviews were conducted with 10 managers of tour operators and 10 diving center managers in Hurghada. A questionnaire was prepared and distributed to 110 employees of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) in the Red Sea Governorate. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression analysis in SPSS 22.0.
These analyses resulted in a strong positive relationship between the ingredients for implementing regenerative tourism in Hurghada and the benefits of implementing regenerative tourism in Hurghada. So, this research recommends that regenerative tourism should be applied and promoted to preserve Hurghada and other coastal destinations in Egypt. Applying regenerative tourism in Hurghada will enhance sustainable tourism development while also taking financial support for its implementation into consideration and preparing training programs to inform tourism stakeholders about sustainable tourism development practices.
