Abstract

Community health nurses may be the unsung heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic, working within communities to help prevent the spread of the disease through prevention, education, and screening. The Association of Community Health Nurses collaborated with other healthcare organizations to identify the numerous responsibilities of public health professionals during the disease outbreak.Through their work in home health agencies, clinics, nonprofit organizations, schools, and government organizations, public health nurses are part of a community’s first line of defense in the war against the coronavirus disease (Bezbaruah, S. et al., 2021).
Aim of the study:
This study aims to assess coping strategies among nursing students at the clinical setting during COVID-19 pandemic through:
• Assessing knowledge of nursing students regarding COVID-19 pandemic.
• Assessing knowledge of nursing students regarding the coping strategies with stressors from risk of catching infection of COVID-19 pandemic at the clinical settings.
• Assessing practice of nursing students related to protection of COVID-19 infection at the clinical settings.
• Assessing physical, social, psychological patterns of coping with stressors from the risk of catching the infection of COVID-19 at the clinical settings.
Research questions:
1. What is nursing students’ knowledge regarding the coping strategies among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic in clinical settings?
2. Is there a relation between social demographic characteristics and coping strategies?
3. Is there a relation between coping strategies and level of knowledge of the nursing students regarding COVID-19 pandemic ?
4. Is there a relation between student practices and their coping strategies of nursing students?
Research design:
A descriptive design was utilized to achieve the aim of this study.

Research setting:
The study was conducted at two nursing Institutes (Technical Nursing Institute Bab El-sharia university Hoapital) and (Al Twfeeq Institute affiliated to Al-Azhar University) were selected by using a multistage stratified sample.
Subjects:
A stratified sample of 201nursing sutdents (104 Female students and 97 male nursing students) enrolled at second, third, fourth and fifth grade at the above mentioned setting was involved in this study.
Data collection tools:
Three tools were used:
First Tool: Self-administered questionnaire:
Self-administered questionnaire for evaluation for nursing students’ related to COVID-19 pandemic at clinical settings including:
Part I: Nursing students’ demographic data.
Part II: Students past history.
Part III: Nursing students’ knowledge related to COVID-19 Pandemic.
Second tool: observational practices checklist:
It was developed by the investigator in simple Arabic language based on the extensive review of relevant and recent literatures to evaluate the observed practices of nursing students related to the prevention of COVID-19 pandemic.
A. Personal Hygiene including 5 statements.
B. General practices while being at hospital including 14 statements.
C. personal equipments including3 statements .
D. Additional activities related to practice including 6 statements.
Third tool: Coping Scale:
The coping scale based on the investigator designed a tool to assess nursing students coping strategies related to protection from COVID-19 infection at the clinical setting and adapted from (Yih, J. et all ,2019) . It included three aspects:
A. Coping methods that focus on the physical aspect included 13 statements.
B. Coping methods that focus on the psychological and spiritual aspect included 13 statements.
C. Coping methods that focus on the social aspect included 5 statements.
Results of the present study revealed that:
• Regarding demographic characteristics of the studied students shows that 37.8% of nursing students were 17 years old and 51.7% were females in addition 73.1% of them didn’t work.
• Regarding total knowledge score level about measures related to coping the present study result illustrated that, 72.6% of nursing students had satisfactory total knowledge about measures related to coping but 27.4% of them had unsatisfactory total knowledge .
• Regarding sources of knowledge regarding COVID-19 the present study result illustrated that, 69.7% of nursing students took their information about disease from the social media and 15.4% of them had their information from the books and websites.
• Regarding total reported practices score level regarding prevention of COVID-19 the current study result illustrates that 36.8% of nursing students had adequate practices related to protection of COVID-19 but 63.2% of them had inadequate practices related to protection .
• Regarding Total coping strategies related to protection from COVID-19 infection at the clinical setting. The current study result illustrates that 87.6% of nursing students had a positive total coping strategies related to protection from COVID-19 and 12.4% of them had a negative total coping strategies related to protection from COVID-19.
• There was statistically non-significant correlation between demographic characteristics of nursing students and coping strategies related to protection from COVID- 19 infection at the clinical setting (age- grade- gender- student work) (p-value > 0.05).
• There was a positive correlation between nursing students’ knowledge and coping strategies. (P value < 0.05)
• There was a positive correlation between nursing students’ practice and coping strategies (P value < 0.05).
In the light of the current study findings and research questions, it can be concluded that,
Less than three quarters of nursing students had satisfactory total knowledge about measures related to coping but more than one quarter of them had unsatisfactory total knowledge. Moreover, there was statistically non-significant correlation between demographic characteristics of nursing students and coping strategies related to protection from COVID-19 infection at the clinical setting (age- grade- gender- student work). Additionally, there was a positive correlation between nursing students’ knowledge, practice and coping strategies
Based on the current study finding and research questions the following recommendations were proposed:
 Increasing COVID-19 awareness or educational programs that lead to raise student and community’ intentions to adopt preventive behaviors.
 Health educational program regarding coping of COVID during clinical practices
 Students should be given the necessary interventions or platforms to learn and demonstrate appropriate coping strategies.
 Educational institutions should create a conducive environment safe for teaching and learning, especially for practical oriented programs like PE during the ongoing pandemic.
 Particularly, seminars and orientation programs should be provided at schools to help students adopt functional active coping strategies, including emotional support.
 Replication of this study with large number to generalization the results.
