Abstract
Cataract is an important cause of reversible visual loss in patients with uveitis. It develops either due to prolonged inflammation or treatment with corticosteroids or combination of both factors. Cataract surgery in eyes with uveitis represents a challenge and can result in intraoperative and postoperative complications. Careful surgical technique, aggressive preoperative and postoperative control of inflammation, and efficient management of postoperative complications contribute to much better outcome.
The main aim of this study is to evaluate outcome of cataract surgery in patients with uveitis as regarding post operative best corrected visual acuity as primary outcome and post operative complications as secondary outcome over a period of 6 months post operatively, thus estimating the prognostic factors influencing outcome of cataract surgery in patients with uveitis.
This study showed a significant improvement of postoperative BCVA (p value <0.001). Regarding postoperative complications, 50% developed no complication post operatively, (22.2%) developed posterior capsular opacification and 13.9% developed reactivation of uveitis, PCO, and CME, 2.8% show postoperative reactivation of uveitis, and CME. 5.6%show reactivation of uveitis postoperative. CME and PCO were developed as postoperative complication in only 2.8%. PCO and band keratopathy developed in 2.8%.
