Abstract

Tracheostomy refers to an artificial communication between the trachea and the anterior neck. It is an essential procedure for patients suffering from complications of acute or chronic respiratory failure. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the health needs and problems of patients with permanent tracheostomy. Design: A descriptive analytical research design was utilized in this study. Setting: The study was conducted at the surgical outpatient clinic at El Helal and Al Demerdash Hospital, in Cairo, Egypt. Subjects: A purposive sample of 30 patients was used for conducting the study. Tools: Interviewing questionnaire sheet was used for data collection, which included four parts: 1) Socio-demographic characteristics, 2) tracheostomy patients’ knowledge, 3) reported practices, and 4) patients’ health needs and problems. Results: The results indicated that 53.3% of the patients had unsatisfactory knowledge, while 63.3% of them had satisfactory reported practices of care. Furthermore, 66.7% had achieved their health needs, but 73.3% of them had health problems. Conclusion: There were highly statistically significant correlations between the total score of knowledge of the studied patients with permanent tracheostomy, their total score of reported practice, total score of health needs, and total score of problems. Recommendations: conducting training programs for patients regarding effective permanent tracheostomy care.
