Abstract Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common demyelinating and autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) with presumed autoimmune and multifactorial etiologies . MS is the most common cause of non-traumatic neurological disability in young adults. The aim of this work was to study the presence of psychiatric comorbidities in MS patients , mainly depression and anxiety , the risk factors for developing them and their effect on quality of life . The study included 60 patients with MS. They were recruited from outpatient neurology clinics of Sohag University Hospitals and Sohag general hospital in an observational study . Data of our study indicate increased prevalence of depression and anxiety in MS pateints , this was approved by doing a questionarre , HADS score, on all patients included in our study Depression was found to be more prominent in males more than females , and in young age than older .Unemployment was also risk for developing depression . Low or intermediate education and unmarried was related to be a factor for developing depression . Long duration of illness and increase number of attacks were also risks .High EDSS and and low physical and mental assessment by MSQOL -54 quistionarre was also associated with developing of depression. Anxiety was found to be more prominent in patients with low education and unmarrid and low physical and mental assessment by MSQOL -54 quistionarre . Further research is needed to identify sources of heterogeneity. Issues to consider are the definition of depression and anxiety, patient recruitment, and patient characteristics. Limitations -Small sample size in our study. |
