Abstract
Trauma in children is the most important cause of death and disability in childhood, with over 10 million children in the US needing emergency department care and 10,000 dying from serious injuries annually. Road traffic accidents are the most common cause of adolescent deaths among adolescent.
Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for imaging of trauma due to its high sensitivity and specificity. However, it presents a risk of increased mortality due to delays in patient transfer. Its application in pediatrics is limited due to high costs, availability, and sedation requirements.
Point of care ultrasonography (POCUS) plays a crucial role in obtaining images and correlating them to clinical conditions, particularly in unstable polytrauma patients, recognizing life-threatening conditions, aiding in decision-making, and guiding patient disposition from the emergency department.
FAST examination is widely used in pediatric trauma due to its repeated imaging and radiation-free nature.
