Abstract Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a common and potentially life-threatening complication in patients with cirrhosis. Novel and useful biomarkers for early diagnosis of SBP are desirable, such as the MCP-1 gene, calprotectin, procalcitonin, lactoferrin, and leukocyte esterase reagent strips in ascitic fluid. Laboratory methods for early prediction of response to the first treatment are desirable because nonresponse to the first treatment is a predictor of mortality accompanied by SBP. |
