Abstract Vitiligo is a common autoimmune disease that progressively destroys melanocytes in the skin, resulting in the appearance of patchy depigmentation. Irisin is a myokine and adipokine that plays a role in metabolic diseases, aging, inflammation and neurogenesis. Insulin resistance refers to the failure of cells to respond sufficiently to insulin. Dyslipidemias may be manifested by an elevation of the serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglyceride concentrations, and a decrease in the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration. Obesity and insulin resistance are believed to be at the core of most cases of metabolic syndrome. The risk of developing metabolic syndrome is increased in patients with vitiligo. The decrease in irisin is associated with an increased risk of presenting metabolic syndrome.. |
