Abstract This study compared the clinical benefits of double J (DJ) ureteral stenting or percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) for the management of acute infection with complicated ureteral stones. Methods: Between May 2018 and May 2020, 140 patients with acute pyelonephritis secondary to obstructive kidney stone were prospectively randomized into the percutaneous nephrostomy tube group (70 patients) and DJ stent group (7 patients) at Assiut University Hospital, Assiut, Egypt. All patients were investigated as regards to improvement of infection clinically (temperature subside) and laboratory (culture, CBC, and C- reactive protein), complication of both procedures, and effect of each procedure on definitive management of obstructing stone. Exclusion criteria included patients with a contraindication to either form of drainage (uncorrected coagu;2lopathy, urethral stricture disease, bladder outlet obstruction, pregnancy, ureteral stone greater than 15 mm., or Steinstrasse). |
