Abstract Self-harm is one of the major public health problems in adolescents, with high rates in the teenage years. To formulate effective programs for the prevention and intervention of NSSI, it is necessary to have a better understanding of NSSI-associated factors and their perceived functions. • This study aimed at examining the psychosocial factors of NSSI among Egyptian adolescents in Ismailia. We also investigated the relationships between NSSI characteristics and several features such as psychiatric morbidity, personality disorder traits, and perceived social support. • A case-control analytic study was carried out at the psychiatry clinic of Suez Canal University Hospitals on 100 adolescents aged 14–21 years (50 patients in the case group with NSSI and another 50 patients in the control group) who are matched for age, gender, and residence. The case group included those who endorsed NSSI, while the control group included psychiatric patients who denied NSSI. • Self-reports included the Brief Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Assessment Tool, the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4 (PDQ-4), and the multidimensional scale of perceived social support. Besides, patients were interviewed to gather clinician-based data: the Clinician-Rated Severity of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury and the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). • Most of our sample participants were females who live in urban areas; both groups were matched regarding gender, age, and residence. |
