Abstract

Modern construction techniques and technological advancements have caused humans to be detached from the surrounding nature. One of the design approaches to revive and recover this connection is Biophilic design. Recently Biophilic design approach has been implemented in healthcare facilities, which provided various benefits for both patients and staff. This study aims to explore the attributes of Biophilic design that are applicable in health facilities and its relation to the performance of employees. Wherefore, Biophilic design attributes are studied, focusing on deducting the most influential attributes that have been applied in health facilities. This work adopts an inductive approach through reviewing related literature review and the analysis of relevant examples. Moreover, a questionnaire was directed to health professionals and staff to measure their overall satisfaction and their perspective on the most influential attributes of Biophilic design. This study aids in contribution to existing literature of Biophilic design by providing a checklist of Biophilic design in health facilities that could be used either in evaluation or guidance. Furthermore, it introduces a comprehensive overview of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and its importance in health facilities through addressing its significance, benefits, and implementations. Combining Biophilic design and BIM makes a health facility more integrated, achieving multiple features including a healthier work environment, and optimizing the social, economic, and environmental aspects. The findings of this study shed some light on the significance of applying both Biophilic design and BIM in health facilities.
