Abstract

Summary
Subgingival mechanical periodontal therapy is considered the gold standard of periodontal treatment and its clinical efficacy is well documented
The use of chemical adjunctive treatment modalities to the standard mechanical methods is of a great value and one of the recent modalities is the use of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) as an intra pocket medication.
This study was performed to demonstrate the effect of CoQ10 as a local delivery chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of periodontitis by evaluation of the changes in periodontal clinical parameters and evaluation of biochemical changes in gingival crevicular fluid level of IL-1β and IL-10 in treatment of stage II and III periodontitis.
This study was performed on 30 patients diagnosed with stage II or III periodontitis. Patients were divided into two groups, group I consisted of fifteen patients who received mechanical periodontal debridement, then application of CoQ10 gel. While group II included fifteen patients who received mechanical periodontal debridement only.
Clinical parameters including Paque index (PI), Gingival index (GI), Pocket depth (PD) and Clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded at baseline and 3 months postoperatively. Moreover, GCF samples were collected with paper points for biochemical evaluation and it was done at baseline and one month post operatively.
There was no statistical significant difference between the two groups regarding PI and GI.
Regarding PD and CAL, group I showed a statistical significant difference over group II.
Regarding GCF level of IL-1β and IL-10 group I showed a statistical significant difference over group II.
