Abstract A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 70 neonates in neonatal intensive care units’ ”ICU” of Suez Canal university ”SCU” hospitals, Ismailia,Egypt. . The study aimed to determine the prevalence of neonatal oropharyngeal dysphagia” OPD” in Neonatal Intensive Care Units” NICU” of Suez Canal University ”SCU” hospitals using a detailed medical history, feeding history and clinical assessment “ using DST- PI as a screening test and FEES“ as a diagnostic instrument to recognize predisposing risk factors and anatomic defects and to define any feeding problems before attributing them to oropharyngeal pathologies in neonates. Thirty-one percent of them aged from 0 to 7 days, 18.6% aged from 8 to 14 days, 21.4% from 15 to 21 days and 28.6% from 22 to 30 days. There were 41.4% males and 58.6% females . Forty neonates (57.1%) had gestational age between 37 weeks to <38 weeks and 42.9% of neonates from 38 weeks to 40 weeks. In this study The prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia was 18.6% (13 participants Among the participated group 6 (46.1%) had oral dysphagia and 7 (53.8%) had pharyngeal dysphagia. Comorbidities among the participated group were, Inborn error metabolism was found among 1.4%, neurological insult was found among 5.7% and congenital anomalies were found among 5.7%. There is statistically significant association between comorbidities and oropharyngeal dysphagia and there is statistically significant association between gestational age and oropharyngeal dysphagia. |
