Abstract

Background: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is the respiratory impairment that occurs at or shortly after birth and remains as significant reason behind neonatal mortality and morbidity
Doppler velocimetry has been used for measuring fetal pulmonary blood flow in right or left pulmonary arteries plus peripheral branches of them, however, the rate of satisfactory Doppler records is average and disparate.
Aim of the work: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between the main pulmonary artery Doppler studies and RDS in fetuses of diabetic mothers.
Methodology: This prospective study involved diabetic pregnant women who attend to the labor ward between 34 and 38+6 gestational weeks, either with true labor pains and ongoing to have vaginal delivery or elective Caesarean delivery. The study was performed in Gynecology and Obstetrics Department, PortSaid Maternity Hospital from February 2022 to March 2023.
Results: Doppler parameters, show statistically significant difference (p <0.01) in AT, AT/ET, PSV, EDV, and Resistive index while ET (Ejection time) and PI showed statistically non-significant difference (p >0.05) in comparison between the two studied groups.
Conclusion: Estimation of the Main Pulmonary artery AT/ET ratio as a predictor for the fetal lung maturity seems to have an accepted accuracy.
