Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of unilateral lateral rectus recession for correction of small angle intermittent exotropia and we tried to answer the following questions The study was carried out on 30 patients with small angle intermittent exotropia and who met the inclusion criteria, all cases underwent complete ophthalmologic and strabismus examination before and after surgical treatment and completed 6 months follow up. The goal was to bring evidence of whether unilateral lateral rectus recession is an effective choice or not. Incidence of lateral incomitance and if it is affected by the amount of recession, and how often may this intervention produce either over or under-correction? In our procedure, there was no overcorrection or significant limitation in the lateral gazes. The amount of recession in our cases was 6-9 mm for the lateral rectus muscle. In our study, the suggested mean amounts of unilateral lateral rectus recession was 7.4 +/- 0.81 mm and ranged between 6 and 9 mm. There were no significant complications such as slipped muscles or infection.
