Abstract

Maternal active participation and their support are critical for the success of early hearing loss detection program. Erroneous maternal decisions may have large lifelong consequences on the infant’s life. The mothers’ knowledge and their attitudes towards infant hearing loss is the basis for their decisions. Aim: to assess mothers’ knowledge and attitude regarding early detection of hearing loss among their infants in Port Said city. Design: A descriptive cross-section design was used at this study. Setting: the study was conducted at children’s clinics and vaccination rooms in primary health care centers in the general authority of health care within the city of Port Said .Subjects: Non-Probability, Purposive sampling consisted of 279 mothers and they were chosen based on their relative ease of access to the aforementioned health care settings. Tools: data were collected using two tools: An instructional interviewing questionnaire sheet, and mothers’ attitude towards infant screening and early intervention of hearing loss. Results: 44.4% of the studied mothers aged between 30-40 years with Mean ± SD32.22 ± 7.49, 59.9%, 49.1% of the studied mothers had total fair knowledge regarding causes, consequences of hearing loss, 70.6% of the studied mothers had total fair knowledge concerning importance of early detection of hearing loss, 73.5% and 53% of the studied mothers had negative attitude toward the hearing loss problem, and Preferred time of detected hearing loss respectively, , 81.7% and 79.9% of the studied mothers had positive attitude concerning preferred screening method of hearing and Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) and early intervention of hearing loss respectively. Conclusion: more than half of the studied mothers had overall fair knowledge regarding hearing loss and around two thirds of the studied mothers had total positive attitude toward hearing loss.
