Abstract

Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. It accounted for an estimated 604,000 new cancer cases and 342,000 deaths worldwide and was the fourth most common cancer in females. Eighty-four percent of cervical cancer cases were from resource-limited regions. In females in resource-limited countries, cervical cancer was the second most common type of cancer (15.7 per 100,000 females) and the third most common cause of cancer mortality (8.3 per 100,000). The standard of care for locally advanced cervical cancer is external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) with concurrent chemotherapy followed by brachytherapy (BT). It uses a machine to send energy beams that destroy tumors. The machine never touches your body. BT is a crucial component and has been shown to be an essential independent treatment factor associated with improved pelvic control and overall survival.
