Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is the greatest prevalent cancer in females globally & the 2nd main reason of mortality, following lung cancer.
Aim of work: to evaluate the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on breast conservation rate in locally advanced breast cancer cases.
Patients and methods: We conducted a retrospective study on 103 patients diagnosed with locally advanced breast cancer in Kasr Al Ainy and Fayoum University between January 2016 and December 2020, treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, then sent for surgery (MRM or CBS).
Results: 47% of patients had CBS and 35% achieved PCR.
87.4% presented with clinical stage III, highest proportion of the patients were luminal A 47%, 3-year DFS rate for all study group was 65.9% , while OS was 84.9%.
26.2% of the studied group were younger than 40 years old and and 88.9% of them presented with clinical stage III, luminal A, luminal B, Her2 enrich, and TNBC were represented by 51.8%, 14.8%, 22.2%, and 11.1% respectively.
Conclusion: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy has a valuable effect on downstaging and breast conservation, and the disease is more aggressive in young patients.
