Abstract

Endotracheal tube suction is a vital protocol for the maintenance of artificial airway patency. But suctioning is associated with serious complications including hypoxia. Therefore, continuing instructions and education has been regarded as a tool to cope with the fast changes in care methods and improving nursing knowledge and practice. The Aim of the study is to Evaluate the effectiveness of educational program on nurse’s knowledge & practice regarding neonatal endotracheal tube suctioning. A quasi-experimental research design was used to conduct this study. the study was carried out in neonatal intensive care unit of Mansoura university children hospital. A convenience sample included all available nurses (60) from the previously mentioned setting through 6 months period. Two tools for data collection were used : Tool I A structured questionnaire sheet which divided in three parts, part (1) characteristics of nurses. Part (2) related to nurses knowledge about endotracheal tube suctioning. Part (3) related to practical knowledge regarding neonatal endotracheal tube suctioning. Tool (II) include observational check list to assess nurses practices regarding endotracheal tube suctioning. Studied nurses total score of knowledge and practice were higher on post and follow up of conducting program than pre education and there was astatically significant difference with positive correlation between the studied nurses total knowledge and practices scores regarding neonatal endotracheal tube suctioning. The study concluded that implementation of educational program improved nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding neonatal endotracheal tube suctioning. the study recommended that ; nurses need continuing in-service educational training program to improve their knowledge and practice regarding neonatal endotracheal tube suctioning.
