Abstract

Background: Lateral ankle instability is a major orthopaedic challenge nowadays as Lateral ankle sprains account for almost 85% off all ankle sprains. Most patients with ankle sprains improve with conservative treatment. However, 20-40 percent of patients will develop recurrent sprains and chronic lateral ankle instability. Limited results of Broström procedures as a surgical technique in the treatment opened the gate for multiple modifications such augmentation with part of extensor retinaculum (Broström-Gould technique) and use of anchors or suture tape to enforce reconstruction.
Objective: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis study from former available studies to compare clinical outcomes, re-tear and other complications between the Modified Broström procedure versus Internal ankle bracing augmentation with Modified Broström procedure in treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability.
Patients and Methods: This study was conducted following the preferred items for systematic reviews meta-analysis (PRISMA) 6 guided items and check list to answer the question of: which is better as regard improving clinical and radiological outcomes between 1/1/2010 -1/6/2022.
Results: The results of systematic review showed that the use of internal brace augmentation with MBG repair was found to facilitate early rehabilitation and return to preinjury activity level in majority of patients compared to isolated MBG repair. The metanalysis sowed that there is no significant difference in both groups as regard Foot and ankle outcome score (FAOS), Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), sports activity scores, Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), Activities of daily living, Recurrence of instability rates, Irritation of peroneal nerve, Revision surgery rates and Overall complications.
Conclusion: We conducted this systematic review, meta-analysis study to compare the clinical outcome, early rehabilitation and complications of two surgical procedure in treatment of lateral ankle instability after failure of conservative measures, both surgical techniques are modified Broström repair alone and internal ankle brace augmentation of the modified Broström repair.
